TL;DR — Plain English Summary

  • You must be at least 13 years old to use BalanceBoard.
  • BalanceBoard is a wellness tool, not a medical service. It is not therapy or counseling.
  • Our AI is here to help you manage tasks and stress — it cannot do your homework and is not a therapist.
  • Anonymous features don't protect you from accountability for harmful behavior.
  • We access Google Classroom in read-only mode — we cannot change or submit anything.
  • You own your data. You can export or delete it anytime.
  • In a genuine crisis, please call 988 or text "HELLO" to 741741.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using BalanceBoard ("the Service," "the Platform," or "the App"), you ("User," "you," or "your") agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"), our Privacy Policy, Community Guidelines, AI Disclaimer, and Mental Health Disclaimer. All of these documents form a binding legal agreement between you and BalanceBoard.

If you do not agree to any part of these Terms, do not use BalanceBoard.

Parental Acknowledgment: If you are between 13 and 17 years old (a minor), we strongly encourage a parent or legal guardian to review these Terms with you. By using BalanceBoard, you represent that you have obtained parental permission to do so, or that you are at least 18 years old.

2. Eligibility & Age Requirements

To use BalanceBoard, you must:

  • Be at least 13 years old. We do not knowingly allow children under 13 to create accounts, consistent with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
  • Have a valid Google account to sign in via Google OAuth.
  • Be a current or prospective middle school, high school, or college student.
  • Have the legal capacity to enter into binding agreements in your jurisdiction, or have parental/guardian authorization.
  • Not be barred from receiving services under applicable law.
  • Not have had a previous BalanceBoard account terminated for violations of these Terms.

COPPA Notice — Children Under 13

BalanceBoard is not directed to children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a user under 13 has created an account, we will immediately delete their account and all associated data. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has registered, please contact us immediately at privacy@balanceboard.app.

Users aged 13–17 are minors. We strongly encourage a parent or legal guardian to review these Terms and our Privacy Policy with you before creating an account. By using BalanceBoard, you represent that you have obtained parental or guardian permission, or that you are 18 or older.

BalanceBoard is designed for student use. Use by parents monitoring students' data without the student's knowledge is not permitted. If a school district wants to deploy BalanceBoard institutionally, please contact us at support@balanceboard.app to establish a separate institutional agreement with appropriate FERPA provisions.

3. Your Account

BalanceBoard uses Google OAuth for authentication — we do not store passwords. When you connect your Google account:

  • You authorize us to access your Google account information (email, name, profile photo) and the Google Classroom scopes you specifically approve.
  • You are responsible for the security of your Google account, including any activity that occurs when your account is accessed.
  • Do not share your account with others. Each student should have their own account.
  • You must notify us immediately at support@balanceboard.app if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
  • We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that show signs of unauthorized access or policy violations.

4. Description of Services

BalanceBoard provides the following core features:

  • Academic Hub: Task management, Google Classroom integration for assignment syncing, test prep tracking, grade tracking, and academic calendar.
  • Wellness Hub: Daily mood, sleep, stress, and energy check-ins; wellness habit tracking; AI Wellness Coach; and crisis support tools.
  • Connect Hub: Anonymous Study Pods with video/audio calls and file sharing; anonymous Vent Rooms with 24-hour message expiry; anonymous Peer Support Forum.
  • College Hub: Application pipeline tracking and target school directory.
  • AI Buddy: An AI assistant powered by Anthropic Claude for task management, stress detection, and workload navigation.

We reserve the right to add, modify, or discontinue any features at any time. We will provide reasonable notice of significant changes.

5. Google Classroom Integration

When you connect Google Classroom:

  • We request read-only access to your enrolled courses, assignments, and submission status. We cannot write to, modify, or submit anything in your Google account.
  • The Google Classroom API scopes we request are: classroom.courses.readonly, classroom.coursework.me.readonly, classroom.student-submissions.me.readonly.
  • You may disconnect Google Classroom at any time in Settings. Existing synced assignments will remain but no new syncs will occur.
  • Our use of Google API data is subject to Google's API Services User Data Policy and Limited Use requirements.
  • You remain subject to Google's own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy when using Google services.

6. Artificial Intelligence Features

BalanceBoard's AI Buddy and AI Wellness Coach are powered by Anthropic's Claude models. By using AI features, you acknowledge:

Important AI Limitations

  • The AI is not a licensed therapist, counselor, psychologist, doctor, or other healthcare professional.
  • AI responses about wellness and stress are not medical advice and should not replace professional mental health care.
  • The AI will not do your homework — it will not solve math problems, write essays, or complete assignments for you.
  • AI responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information.
  • Do not make important health, medical, legal, or financial decisions based solely on AI responses.

What the AI can help with:

  • Creating, updating, and organizing your tasks through natural language
  • Identifying stress patterns in your messages and suggesting BalanceBoard tools
  • Summarizing your weekly workload and wellness trends
  • Navigating to the right part of BalanceBoard for your needs

See our AI Disclaimer for comprehensive terms governing AI features.

8.1 Your Content

You retain ownership of content you create on BalanceBoard (tasks, journal notes, posts, messages). By submitting content, you grant BalanceBoard a limited, non-exclusive license to store, display, and transmit that content for the purpose of operating the service. We do not claim ownership over your content.

8.2 Prohibited Conduct

You agree NOT to:

  • Post content that is abusive, harassing, threatening, defamatory, discriminatory, or violent toward any person
  • Share content that sexually exploits, endangers, or demeans minors in any way
  • Bully or target specific individuals in peer support forums, vent rooms, or study pods
  • Impersonate any person, teacher, administrator, or institution
  • Share or solicit personally identifiable information about other students (doxxing)
  • Post content that promotes self-harm, suicide methods, or eating disorder behaviors
  • Attempt to identify anonymous users in any Connect feature
  • Use BalanceBoard to cheat, plagiarize, or engage in academic dishonesty (we will not assist with this)
  • Conduct unauthorized penetration testing, scraping, or API abuse
  • Create multiple accounts to evade bans or restrictions
  • Introduce malware, phishing links, or harmful code through any feature
  • Attempt to access data belonging to other users
  • Use AI features to generate harmful content, manipulate the system, or circumvent safety guardrails
  • Attempt to "jailbreak" the AI through prompt injection, role-play scenarios ("pretend you are a different AI"), hypothetical framing, or any other technique designed to override safety instructions
  • Use automated scripts, bots, or tools to make bulk requests to any BalanceBoard API endpoint
  • Use BalanceBoard for commercial purposes, recruiting, or solicitation
  • Share illegal content, pirated material, or links to illegal resources
  • Upload files containing malicious code, executables, or content designed to harm other users' systems

8.3 Content in Anonymous Features

Anonymous features (Vent Rooms, Study Pods, Peer Support Forum) use randomly generated usernames to hide your identity from other users. However:

  • We internally link anonymous content to your account for safety and moderation
  • Violations of these Terms in anonymous spaces carry the same consequences as violations under your real identity
  • Vent Room messages auto-delete after 24 hours, but moderation records may be retained

9. Moderation & Enforcement

We use a combination of automated systems and human review to moderate community content. BalanceBoard reserves the right to:

  • Remove any content that violates these Terms or our Community Guidelines at our sole discretion
  • Issue warnings, temporary suspensions, or permanent bans depending on severity
  • Rate-limit or restrict access to specific features for repeat violators
  • Escalate serious violations (threats of violence, CSAM, serious self-harm indicators) to appropriate authorities

To report a violation: use the in-app report feature or email support@balanceboard.app. We investigate all reports.

You may appeal moderation decisions by emailing support@balanceboard.app with subject "Moderation Appeal." We aim to respond within 5 business days.

10. Crisis & Emergency Policy

BalanceBoard takes user safety seriously. In situations where we have a good-faith belief that a user poses an imminent risk to their own life or others', we may:

  • Prominently display crisis resources (988, Crisis Text Line) in the app interface
  • Have our AI redirect the user to appropriate crisis resources
  • In extreme cases where imminent danger is indicated, we may contact relevant authorities or a student's school—this is a last resort and subject to our Safety Policy

We are not equipped to monitor conversations in real-time and are not a substitute for crisis intervention services. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

See our Safety Policy for complete details.

11. Data Ownership & Privacy

You own the data you enter into BalanceBoard. We only use your data to operate and improve the service as described in our Privacy Policy.

  • You may export all your data via Settings → Export Data
  • You may delete your account and all associated data via Settings → Delete Account
  • We do not sell your personal data to any third party
  • We do not use your wellness or academic data for targeted advertising

12. Intellectual Property

BalanceBoard and its original content, features, functionality, name, logo, and design are owned by BalanceBoard and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, publicly display, or exploit any part of BalanceBoard's interface, branding, or code without express written permission.

You retain all intellectual property rights to content you create (posts, notes, tasks). By submitting content, you represent that you own or have the necessary rights to that content and that it does not infringe on any third party's rights.

13. Third-Party Services & Links

BalanceBoard integrates with third-party services including Google, Anthropic, and Supabase. Your use of these services is also governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. BalanceBoard is not responsible for third-party services' privacy practices or content.

The platform may contain links to external websites. We do not endorse or assume responsibility for any third-party content or sites linked from BalanceBoard.

IN NO EVENT SHALL BALANCEBOARD'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU EXCEED THE GREATER OF: (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO USE THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM; OR (B) $100 USD.

SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY FOR PERSONAL INJURY OR INCIDENTAL/CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. IN SUCH JURISDICTIONS, OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

16. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless BalanceBoard and its creators from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, judgments, awards, losses, costs, expenses, or fees (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or relating to: (a) your violation of these Terms; (b) any content you submit or post; (c) your use of AI features in a manner inconsistent with these Terms; or (d) your violation of any third party's rights.

17. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to BalanceBoard immediately, without notice, for any conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, BalanceBoard, or third parties.

You may terminate your account at any time via Settings → Delete Account. Upon termination, your right to use the Service immediately ceases. Data deletion procedures are described in our Privacy Policy.

Provisions that by their nature should survive termination shall survive, including Sections 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 19.

18. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of state and federal courts located in Delaware for any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms.

Informal Resolution First: Before filing a formal claim, you agree to try to resolve the dispute informally by contacting us at support@balanceboard.app. We will attempt to resolve your concern within 30 days.

Class Action Waiver: You agree to resolve disputes only on an individual basis and waive the right to participate in class action lawsuits or class-wide arbitration.

Notwithstanding the above, either party may seek emergency injunctive relief in a court of competent jurisdiction where necessary to protect their rights.

19. General Provisions

Entire Agreement: These Terms and referenced documents constitute the entire agreement between you and BalanceBoard regarding the Service and supersede all prior agreements.

Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

No Waiver: Our failure to enforce any provision does not constitute a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

Assignment: You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights without restriction.

Communications: We may send you important notices via the email address associated with your account. You are responsible for keeping your email up to date.

20. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
  • Send an email notification to your registered address
  • Display a prominent in-app banner for 30 days

Continued use of BalanceBoard after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the new Terms. If you do not agree, you may delete your account.
