EFFECTIVE: MARCH 30, 2026|LAST UPDATED: AUGUST 31, 2026|VERSION: 2026-08-31

TL;DR — Plain English Summary

  • You must be at least 13 years old to use BalanceBoard.
  • BalanceBoard is a wellness tool, not a medical service. It is not therapy or counseling.
  • Our AI is here to help you manage tasks and stress — it cannot do your homework and is not a therapist.
  • We access Google Classroom in read-only mode — we cannot change or submit anything.
  • You own your data. You can export or delete it anytime.
  • In a genuine crisis, please call or text 988, or text "HOME" to 741741.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using BalanceBoard ("the Service," "the Platform," or "the App"), you ("User," "you," or "your") agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"), our Privacy Policy, AI Disclaimer, and Mental Health Disclaimer. All of these documents form a binding legal agreement between you and BalanceBoard.

If you do not agree to any part of these Terms, do not use BalanceBoard.

If you are under 18, we encourage you to review these Terms with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult.

2. Eligibility & Age Requirements

To use BalanceBoard, you must:

  • Be at least 13 years old. Your date of birth is collected at signup to confirm this, and accounts cannot be completed for children under 13, consistent with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Providing a false date of birth is a violation of these Terms.
  • Be in the United States. BalanceBoard accounts are currently available only in the United States.
  • Have a valid Google account to sign in via Google OAuth.
  • Be a current or prospective student (BalanceBoard is designed for high school students).
  • Be legally permitted to use the Service in your jurisdiction.
  • Not be barred from receiving services under applicable law.
  • Not have had a previous BalanceBoard account terminated for violations of these Terms.

COPPA Notice — Children Under 13

BalanceBoard is not directed to children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a user under 13 has created an account, we will suspend access and begin deletion of the account and associated personal data. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has registered, please contact us immediately at privacy@balanceboard.app.

Users aged 13–17 are minors. We encourage a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult to review these Terms and our Privacy Policy with you.

BalanceBoard is designed for individual student use. It does not currently offer parent, counselor, teacher, roster, or school-administrator access to a student account, and it is not currently offered as a school deployment.

3. Your Account

BalanceBoard uses Google OAuth for authentication — we do not store passwords. When you connect your Google account:

  • You authorize us to access your Google account information (email, name, profile photo) and the Google Classroom scopes you specifically approve.
  • You are responsible for the security of your Google account, including any activity that occurs when your account is accessed.
  • Do not share your account with others. Each student should have their own account.
  • You must notify us immediately at support@balanceboard.app if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
  • We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that show signs of unauthorized access or policy violations.

4. Description of Services

BalanceBoard provides the following core features:

  • Academic Hub: Task management, Google Classroom integration for assignment syncing, test prep tracking, grade tracking, and academic calendar.
  • Wellness Hub: Daily mood, sleep, stress, and energy check-ins; wellness habit tracking; AI Wellness Coach; and crisis support tools.
  • College Hub: Application pipeline tracking and target school directory.
  • AI task planning: An optional Anthropic-powered tool for creating, updating, prioritizing, and breaking down tasks. A separate limited phrase check can display crisis resources but does not assess risk.

We reserve the right to add, modify, or discontinue any features at any time. We will provide reasonable notice of significant changes.

5. Google Classroom Integration

When you connect Google Classroom:

  • We request read-only access to your enrolled courses, assignments, and submission status. We cannot write to, modify, or submit anything in your Google account.
  • The Google Classroom API scopes we request are: classroom.courses.readonly, classroom.coursework.me.readonly, classroom.student-submissions.me.readonly.
  • You may disconnect Google Classroom at any time in Settings. Existing synced assignments will remain but no new syncs will occur.
  • Our use of Google API data is subject to Google's API Services User Data Policy and Limited Use requirements.
  • You remain subject to Google's own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy when using Google services.

6. Artificial Intelligence Features

BalanceBoard's AI Buddy and AI Wellness Coach are powered by Anthropic's Claude models. By using AI features, you acknowledge:

Important AI Limitations

  • The AI is not a licensed therapist, counselor, psychologist, doctor, or other healthcare professional.
  • AI responses about wellness and stress are not medical advice and should not replace professional mental health care.
  • The AI will not do your homework — it will not solve math problems, write essays, or complete assignments for you.
  • AI responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information.
  • Do not make important health, medical, legal, or financial decisions based solely on AI responses.

AI task planning is governed by these Terms and the AI Notice. Task or message information is sent only when you deliberately use an AI planning action, and you may disable AI planning in Settings. AI wellness insights require a separate choice before structured wellness fields may be sent to the AI provider.

What the AI can help with:

  • Creating, updating, and organizing your tasks through natural language
  • Identifying stress patterns in your messages and suggesting BalanceBoard tools
  • Summarizing your weekly workload and wellness trends
  • Navigating to the right part of BalanceBoard for your needs

See our AI Disclaimer for comprehensive terms governing AI features.

8.1 Your Content

You retain ownership of content you create on BalanceBoard, such as tasks and journal notes. By submitting content, you grant BalanceBoard a limited, non-exclusive license to store, display, and transmit that content only as needed to operate the service. We do not claim ownership over your content.

8.2 Prohibited Conduct

You agree NOT to:

  • Post content that is abusive, harassing, threatening, defamatory, discriminatory, or violent toward any person
  • Share content that sexually exploits, endangers, or demeans minors in any way
  • Impersonate any person, teacher, administrator, or institution
  • Share or solicit personally identifiable information about other students (doxxing)
  • Post content that promotes self-harm, suicide methods, or eating disorder behaviors
  • Use BalanceBoard to cheat, plagiarize, or engage in academic dishonesty (we will not assist with this)
  • Conduct unauthorized penetration testing, scraping, or API abuse
  • Create multiple accounts to evade bans or restrictions
  • Introduce malware, phishing links, or harmful code through any feature
  • Attempt to access data belonging to other users
  • Use AI features to generate harmful content, manipulate the system, or circumvent safety guardrails

  • Share illegal content, pirated material, or links to illegal resources
  • Upload files containing malicious code, executables, or content designed to harm other users' systems

9. Moderation & Enforcement

BalanceBoard may take proportionate action when an account abuses the service or violates these Terms, including:

  • Remove content submitted to an available feature when it violates these Terms
  • Issue warnings, temporary suspensions, or permanent account restrictions depending on severity
  • Rate-limit or restrict access to specific features for repeat violators
  • Respond to valid legal process and make disclosures required by applicable law

To report abuse of an available feature or ask about an account restriction, email support@balanceboard.app. BalanceBoard does not promise continuous monitoring or a guaranteed review time.

10. Crisis & Emergency Policy

BalanceBoard takes user safety seriously. In situations where we have a good-faith belief that a user poses an imminent risk to their own life or others', we may:

  • Prominently display crisis resources (988, Crisis Text Line) in the app interface
  • Have our AI redirect the user to appropriate crisis resources
  • The automated safety check displays crisis resources only. It does not monitor continuously or contact a parent, school, counselor, or emergency service.

We are not equipped to monitor conversations in real-time and are not a substitute for crisis intervention services. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

See our Safety Policy for complete details.

11. Data Ownership & Privacy

You own the data you enter into BalanceBoard. We only use your data to operate and improve the service as described in our Privacy Policy.

  • You may export all your data via Settings → Export Data
  • You may delete your account and all associated data via Settings → Delete Account
  • We do not sell your personal data to any third party
  • We do not use your wellness or academic data for targeted advertising

12. Intellectual Property

BalanceBoard and its original content, features, functionality, name, logo, and design are owned by BalanceBoard and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, publicly display, or exploit any part of BalanceBoard's interface, branding, or code without express written permission.

You retain all intellectual property rights to content you create (posts, notes, tasks). By submitting content, you represent that you own or have the necessary rights to that content and that it does not infringe on any third party's rights.

13. Third-Party Services & Links

BalanceBoard integrates with third-party services including Google, Anthropic, and Supabase. Your use of these services is also governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. BalanceBoard is not responsible for third-party services' privacy practices or content.

The platform may contain links to external websites. We do not endorse or assume responsibility for any third-party content or sites linked from BalanceBoard.

14. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR UNINTERRUPTED SERVICE. BALANCEBOARD DOES NOT WARRANT THAT: (A) THE SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES; (B) THE SERVICE WILL BE FREE FROM ERRORS, VIRUSES, OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS; (C) THE ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY OF ANY AI-GENERATED CONTENT; OR (D) THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.

BALANCEBOARD IS A STUDENT WELLNESS TOOL. IT IS EXPRESSLY NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE, CLINICAL TOOL, CRISIS INTERVENTION SERVICE, OR SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT.

15. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, BALANCEBOARD AND ITS CREATORS, OPERATORS, AGENTS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF GOODWILL, PERSONAL INJURY, OR ANY OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

IN NO EVENT SHALL BALANCEBOARD'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU EXCEED THE GREATER OF: (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO USE THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM; OR (B) $100 USD.

SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY FOR PERSONAL INJURY OR INCIDENTAL/CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. IN SUCH JURISDICTIONS, OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

16. Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for using BalanceBoard lawfully, protecting your account, reviewing information before relying on it, and respecting the rights of others. Nothing in these Terms removes rights or remedies that applicable law gives you.

17. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to BalanceBoard immediately, without notice, for any conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, BalanceBoard, or third parties.

You may terminate your account at any time via Settings → Delete Account. Upon termination, your right to use the Service immediately ceases. Data deletion procedures are described in our Privacy Policy.

Provisions that by their nature should survive termination shall survive, including Sections 12, 14, 15, 18, and 19.

18. Governing Law & Disputes

These Terms are governed by applicable California and United States law, without limiting any protections that cannot legally be waived in your jurisdiction.

If you have a concern, you may contact support@balanceboard.app. This informal contact option does not limit either party's legal rights or available remedies.

19. General Provisions

Entire Agreement: These Terms and referenced documents constitute the entire agreement between you and BalanceBoard regarding the Service and supersede all prior agreements.

Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

No Waiver: Our failure to enforce any provision does not constitute a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

Assignment: You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights without restriction.

Communications: When notice is required, we may provide it through the Service or another appropriate available channel.

20. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service changes or as required by law. We will identify the current version and effective date on this page and provide additional notice through an appropriate available channel when required.

If an update requires a new acceptance, BalanceBoard will ask you to review it before you continue using affected features. If you do not agree, you may stop using the Service and delete your account.
