Homework Stress Tips That Actually Make a Dent

Homework stress tips are everywhere online, and a lot of them are genuinely useless — "make a to-do list!" "take breaks!" Cool, I've heard that. Here are the ones that actually do something when I'm in a bad homework week and nothing feels like it's working.

Shrink your ambition for tonight

Instead of "finish everything," set the goal as "do three specific things." Seriously, just three. Write them on paper before you sit down. When you're stressed, the full pile feels like a wall you have to climb before you can breathe — three things is a step you can actually take.

Change your environment

If you've been sitting at the same desk for two hours and it's not working, something needs to change. Move to the kitchen. Go to the library. Sit outside for 20 minutes. This sounds random but your brain associates places with how you feel. Sometimes a new spot genuinely resets the session.

The things that help stress directly (not just work)

  • A 10-minute walk between heavy subjects — physical movement cuts cortisol fast
  • Slow breathing: 4 counts in, 6 counts out, repeat 5 times
  • Texting a friend for 5 minutes — human connection, even briefly, genuinely helps
  • Eating something if you haven't eaten since lunch
  • Closing every tab and app that isn't the thing you're working on

The one I forget most often

Sleep. I know, obvious. But when a week is bad I default to staying up later to "catch up" which just makes the next day worse, which makes the whole week worse. Getting to bed at a reasonable time even when the homework isn't done is sometimes the right call for your performance the next day.

Right now: write down the three things you're doing tonight, set a stop time, and actually stop at that time. The list will still be there tomorrow.
